SOLAR PAINT : TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION

The latest solar technology make use of paints to power planes, automobiles and trains. Actually everything that are exposed to sunlight can be made as a source of power. The secret behind this invention is a paint-on, quantum dot solar cell developed by Ted Sargent, a research institution which excels in nanotechnology, at the University of Toronto.

The paint consists of several quantum dots that are acutely small, measuring only a few nano meters in diameter, which is ten thousand times smaller than a human hair. These quantum dots are capable of converting solar energy into electrical energy like those existing solar cells. But the difference between existing cells and quantum dots is that the cost of quantum dots is extremely less compared to others.

Expense of one square meter of this solar paint is just $15 whereas the cost of traditional ones is about $1000. The main drawback of this technology is that it is not efficient enough to capture and convert all the energy incident on it. But developers believe that the low cost would promote this solar paint.

With the new invention, scientists believe that the total energy output resulting from solar power would certainly double than the present outcome.According to Michael McGehee of Stanford University, a renowned expert in organic solar cells, a power conversion efficiency rate of 6% percent for quantum dots is a very impressive progression.
